Sew a backpack

The backpack is an important part of the project and, to be distributed together with the kit, it must follow some specific guidelines.

For this reason, we ask you to make it as follows:

in the dimensions specified by the pattern;
if possible, using natural fabrics;
preferably colorful.

For consistency and organizational reasons, we will not be able to accept backpacks other than those designed for the project.

Send us colors

If you would like to contribute by sending us colors, we ask you to choose only those indicated in the link we will provide in the instructions.

For practical reasons we cannot accept every type of coloring material. In particular, we cannot accept markers or colored pencils, while wax crayons are very welcome

Every year, thousands of people reach Lampedusa after crossing the Central Mediterranean route, one of the most dangerous and deadly in the world. It is a long journey, often marked by fear, loss, and violence, leaving deep scars even on the youngest.

Immediately after landing on the island, each girl or boy is also processed in the hotspot, a place that can hardly be described as welcoming and that rarely offers the conditions needed for them to feel safe, express themselves freely, and begin to process the trauma of the journey they have just endured.

It is a vision of non-personhood in which every child arriving through the border loses everything familiar and finds themselves in a space that neither sees nor protects them.

For this reason, from the moment they arrive at Molo Favaloro, we have chosen to welcome them with a simple yet meaningful gesture: a good and unique gift, designed especially for them, one that offers the recognition and visibility they deserve.

Welcome Kit

Each Welcome Kit includes:

a small backpack

made of fabric, handmade and designed for children. It can accompany them throughout their journey, becoming a companion in the adventures ahead.

a silent book

a wordless illustrated book, conceived as a universal object, able to overcome any language barrier and accompany children on an imaginary journey through the wonders of the world.

some colors

to allow them to color the pages, reclaim the creative gesture, and find a space and time for expression and presence during a moment of great vulnerability.

This book is our way of saying: we see you. A tool for those who must now wait and adjust their lives to the cruel systems created by adults. A book that, as books do, opens access to a more intimate, personal, and safer space. A book to read, look at, and color. We would like every child arriving in Lampedusa to receive this Kit, but to make that possible we also need your support.
